Anuradhapura - the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka

According to the certain archeological evidence sri lanka had been inhabited more than 150,000 years ago .it would provide from the Archeological evidence now which is been investigated .somehow the historical era starts after the Buddhism had been introduced to sri lanka in 250BC .Aryan who had visited before that particular era from India had managed to overcome or defeat sri lanka ancestors had established themselves in sri lanka According to the facts vijaya clan and later sakaya clans later lambakarna clans had been administrated sri lanka up to the kandyan era.

Archeological evidence which is been found in the inner circle Anuradhapura has shown some Roman earthen ware which are dated back 6BC century these facts proves that our ancient history had been taken back to 3rd BC what is important in the letters which had been found there which are still unreadable by the experts so the day they would be able to read them definitely our history would be taken back to 6 BC.

Before Anuradhapura had been established as a kingdom the earlier kingdoms facts are yet to be found .suppose if we give up legends regarding the earlier capitals the first historical kingdom is no doubt Anuradapura.

Anuradagama later was called Anuradhapura and it was created by a minister of vijaya it was declared as a town by the king pandukabaya 380-310BC and the Architecture was one Jothya a Brahaman ,Jiena As the city was initiated by the minister Anurada and As they had opened the city by Anurada the auspicious time it was named Anurada.

Ariyans were in the habit of naming any city or towns by the person’s name thus Anurada minister was Anurada Anuradhapura was firstly ruled by king pandukabaya as it was created by an Engineer. From then up to 993AD .it was used as a capital city until it was captured be the soliyan when it was used by many kings for a period of 14 centuries until the invasion the capital was shifted to polonnaruwa.

A high temperature prevails in the North central region but Anuradhapura was highly or densely populated during that time There would have been a large amount of houses .so to curtail the temperature the kings may have built parks Lakes and ponds in and around the city .There are a large amount of lakes surrounding the city of Anuradhapura .Basawakkulama or Abaya lake periyankulama ,Nuwaera lake ,Tisha lake, and puliyankulam are some of the lakes around the capital Nandana park was created to right of the main gate ,further to the right a park called “mahamega” was created later it was donated to maha viharaya besides these inside the holy city many large and small ponds were created .The biggest pond is Earth pond which is 150 meters in long 50 meters in side and 10meters deep

The original Anuradhapura was called “inner town” where mahaviharaya ,Abayagiriya,and Jethawanaramaya, which was consider reverend chapters at that time are established the East West and the South, these particular area is now called as “Holly city” The inner city was reserved for the king his followers ,ministers and the VIP the holy city was reserved for the clergy and the Buddhist buildings. When we mention Anuradhapura both these section are counted now there is a new Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura was one of the well known traditional Buddhist cultural towns from the inscription up to the highest improvement and had been the capital is a significant characteristic feature. There is no doubt when people see all the pagodas, statues, and tree of Boo, the visitors may felt elated and devoted by the saintly atmosphere
