Gal viharaya

Gal veharaya or Uthara Ramaya is one of most magnificent and amazing temple on plonnaruwe ,statues are built on this rock one is seated or Samadhi and the other one is a standing statue the last one depicts the demise of Buddha ,these statues are one of the most elegant statues in polonnaruwa.

Atadage two stored building constructed by king vijaya bahu the length is 75 feet width is 45 feet the upper store was reserved for the tooth relic and the relic of Bowl, lower staire is for two Buddha statue inside the building 8feet pillars are there the number is 54 .According the inscription which mention the wellakkara solder s were trusted to protect the tooth relic.

Samadhi statues - large

The height of this statue is 16 feet on the background a pen dot is carved to show that Buddha is reverend should be honored ,small Buddha state are built on the side and lotus flowers are carved on the door of the statue a dragon’s face and a lions face is craved

Samadhi statues - Small

It is located in a cave which is 13 feet height and 26 feet wide, Buddha is rested on a flowering seat the height of the statue is 4 feet 7inches, the statue is craved with umbrella, Buddha is surrounded by gods with includes Brkkma and Vishnu the canopy is decorated by frescoes

Gal veharaya stone inscription (kathikawatha)

This depicts the law and rules for monk which had been inaugurated by king parakkramabahu is in between veggdara temple and statue of Buddha.

Standing Buddha

This statue is the one of the bet statues which is about 23 feet in highs the statue depicts the statue of Ananda thero after the demise of Buddha which is sorrowful to him but some argued this is the Buddha statue because of curly hair corrected on a followers long ears, and hands .Dr paranavithana also says that this statue is Buddha the statue of demising Buddha .there is a controversy whether this statue is demised or sleeping Buddha, which is 46 feet in length .the right palm is kept under the head ,the pillow and mattress have sunk because of the weight all the statues have covered on the gal veharaya

Tamil maha saya

This is a biggest pagoda in polonnaruwa it is believed that king parakkrama had forced the Tamil prisoners to built it .the circular radices is 1500 feet ,the height is 600 feet ,it contains two stories.

Nalum pokuna (lotus pond)

This creation is one of the magnificent creations in polonnaruwa it depicts a booming lotus from the bottom and where it is filled with water, the deep is 4.1/2 feet, and it was built for the use of jathwanaramaya monks.

Madirigerya watha dage

This holy place is famous from BC up today the bricks found there depicts the long lasting history of this place, the first mention of this place was during king kanshtha tissa 167-186 later lot of kings contributed to the up liftmen of this temple once it was destroyed by the soli invention step by step it was developed by many kings.
