Embekke Devalaya

Ambekka Devalaya was built by the king vikkramabahu lll in 1357-1374 AD which tradition asserts was the sinhales war God kartikeya-better known as God katharagama or Devath Bandara also worshiped at this site. This shrine consists of three section the sanctum of Garagha the digge or dancing hall and the havisi mandapaya ,Draming hall ,the Dreammers hall has drown the attraction of visitors to the site due to the splendid wood carving.

In the Digge (Dancing hall)are to be found sculptured in the middle panels of the wooden pillars and on the Beams conventional Sinhalese designs of the swan the double headed Eagle .the women growing out of the vine Bacchanalian figures in characteristic pose

Wrestling pair dancers and soldiers’ men and women influent and graceful movement and these unique carvings display the skills of the ancient masters and bear testimony to the craftsmanship of the school of wood sculptors of the period.
