250 years Siamese Upasampada
The community of Sangha established in sri lanka by arahant mahinda during the reign of king Devanampiyatissa had withstood all the vicissititudes of history during the last 2300 years, with periodical ups and downs. While some great kings patronized the sangha some others harassed or neglected the sangha
By the reign of king Narendrasinghe of Kandy the sangha in this country had deteriorated to such an extent that there were no properly qualified monks to conduct higher ordination .Accordingly, in1753, emissaries were sent to siam (Thailand) to bring qualified monk to perform Upasampada in sri lanka .Thus was born the Siamese sect in this country. It is to commemorate the completion of 250 years to this event that arrangements are being made with state assistance mainly in Kandy, where the historic event took place 2.5 centuries ago
