Horton Plains

The Horton plains is located in central hills between two huge tall mountains heavy rain fall disturb the flora the rain causes the three main rivers of lanka ,mahaweli,kalani and walawe,the area is covered by clouds and mist and most of the year it is wet ,this plain was renamed by the British ,sir Robert Wilmot Horton was the British governor of Ceylon from 1831 to 1837 Horton plan was declared as wild life sanctuary on 5 December 1969 by British government it is famous for gems caster, most of places are covered by grass , but many tree are found there bamboo is very popular, sri padha can be sighted from the grass lands , sri lanka second and third mountain are situated in Horton plains . second is kirigalpotha (2389, m) and third one is Thotupola kanda (2357 m) the soil type is red –yellow, there are many orchids, many species –endemic plants can be seen in Horton plains, because of strong wind twisted trees are found here in this region includes 24 species mammals 87 species of Birds nine species of reptiles and eight species of amphibians.

Elephants who were in Horton plains vanished in 1940 the biggest mammals now is the somber lot of endemic birds reptiles and mammals are found here, earlier the British had taken this area for hunting but after announced national park the it banded.
