THE STUPA

Nalanda gedige stupa - an intriguing example of buddhist and hindu architecture

Nalanda Gedige is an intriguing example of Hindu and Buddhist architecture. The mandapam, or hall of waiting, is one of the design features that is clearly Hindu. Hindu gods, however, are nowhere to be seen. Similar to the well-known Tantric Buddhist carvings in Khajuraho in India, there are eroded but sensual ones.

The elaborately decorated facade parts are in the style of Madras, South India, which thrived in the seventh century. On the other hand, the southern portion features a semi-circular niche with a high-relief depiction of the god of riches, Kuvera, sitting on a lotus pedestal. This image is unique to Sri Lanka.

A pillar inscription from the 9th or 10th century A.D. was unearthed at the site. This discovery revealed that Nalanda Gedige functioned as a Buddhist monastery.

Recorded in the Sinhala language, it includes a code of regulations made for the temple. Furthermore, some scholars describe this building as a Dravidian architecture dedicated to a Mahayana cult with pronounced Tantric learning and known as an ancient monument of possible Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhist affinities.
