RIDI VIHARAYA –SILVER TEMPLE OF SRI LANKA
Ridi Viharaya, also known as the Silver Temple, is located in the village of Redigama in the Kurunegala District. This Ridi Viharaya site holds immense historical and religious significance. Learn about its ancient origins, unique Kandyan architecture, and free traveler lodging. Situated 94 km from the Colombo-Bandaranaike International Airport, it serves as a convenient and peaceful stop for travelers heading toward Dambulla, Sigiriya, or Polonnaruwa.
THE HISTORY OF RIDI VIHARAYA
Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy (1746–1778) restored the temple during the 18th century CE. Following this, builders added the Uda Viharaya to the structure. Additionally, craftsmen created a number of related devalas, including the Paththini Devalaya and Kumara Bandara Devalaya.
The Malwatte chapter of Buddhist temples currently includes Ridi Viharaya. About twenty-five caves surround the temple, which Arhat monks have occupied since Arahat Mahinda arrived in the third century BCE.
WHY IT CALL REDI VIHARAY

Ridi, which translates as “silver” in English, is associated with the ancient kingdom of Anuradapura in Sri Lankan history. During King Dutugamunu’s reign, Ruwanvelisaya built a basement using silver that was provided from Ridigama.
EXPLORING THE SILVER TEMPLE COMPLEX.
UDA VIHARAYA AT RIDI VIHARAYA
Dating back to the Kandyan era, this structure is home to a unique seated Buddha statue framed by a Makara Thorana. It is the only design of its kind where two dragons emerge from either side of the Buddha’s shoulders. The temple also features a rare, semi-circular Sandakada pahana (moonstone) and murals depicting various legends and scenes from the Ramayana.

JACKFRUIT CAVE

Legend has it that this cave is where a group of traders once offered jackfruit to the Arahant Indraguptha during the Anuradhapura period. The site features a stone pavilion with ornate pillars that reflect a blend of Hindu and Buddhist architectural influences, likely dating back to the 12th century.
SERASUM GALA
Located to the right of the entrance, this rock is believed to be the place where King Dutugamunu would dress before entering the temple to worship. Today, a small, serene stupa sits atop the rock

MAHA VIHARAYA-THE SILVER CAVE

The Rajatha Lena, or Silver Cave, serves as the main temple and is arguably the oldest structure in the complex. Shaped like a cobra’s hood, this cave is believed to be where the original silver ore was discovered. The site has been expanded and preserved by various monarchs throughout history, including Amandagamani Abhaya and Parakramabahu I.
CUSTOM OF HOSPITALITY FOR TRAVELERS
In keeping with a long tradition of hospitality, Ridi Viharaya offers travelers a quiet, welcoming place to rest. The temple provides simple, clean accommodation (dorms or cottages) for visitors looking for a peaceful haven amidst the lush greenery of the Kurunegala District.

Important Tips
Book in advance: As noted by other visitors, it is best to make arrangements well ahead of time. Do not simply arrive expecting a room without notice.
Respect the rules: When visiting a temple, dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees) and be mindful of your volume and behavior.
Clarify expectations: If you are contacting them, it is helpful to ask specifically about the nature of the accommodation (e.g., whether it is a private room or a shared dormitory) and if there are specific schedules or rules for guests you should be aware of.
